Bone Grafting and Sinus Lift Post-Op

Wound Care

Do not disturb the wound. Avoid rinsing, spitting, or touching the wound on the day of surgery.

Bleeding Management

Some blood-tinged saliva is typical for the first day. If bleeding is excessive, apply pressure with gauze for 30 minutes, changing the pad every 30 minutes as needed.

Swelling Reduction

Apply ice to the surgical area continuously for the first 48 hours. Swelling typically peaks around 48–72 hours, then gradually decreases over 3–5 days. Contact your doctor if swelling increases after day three.

Dietary Guidelines

Consume fluids and soft foods initially. Avoid hot liquids and foods, and keep solid foods away from the surgical site.

Pain Management

Begin pain medication before the anesthetic wears off. Over-the-counter ibuprofen (3–4 tablets every 6–8 hours) is effective for moderate pain. Use prescribed medication for severe pain.

Antibiotics

Take any prescribed antibiotics exactly as directed to prevent infection.

Oral Hygiene

Use warm saltwater rinses (one teaspoon of salt in a cup of water) 4–5 times daily. Avoid brushing the two teeth adjacent to the graft on each side for five days; after five days, resume brushing gently without disturbing the graft.

Activity Restrictions

Minimize physical activity initially. Stop exercising if you notice throbbing or bleeding.

Sinus Lift Specific Care

  • Do not blow your nose for at least 7 days, as the pressure will delay or damage your sinus healing.
  • If you need to sneeze, keep your mouth open to minimize nasal pressure.
  • Nasal decongestants like Sudafed® or Afrin® can help reduce drainage.
  • Avoid straws — the suction can damage healing blood clots.
  • Do not smoke, as it reduces blood flow and increases infection risk.

Probiotic Support

Take 1–2 servings of yogurt or acidophilus tablets daily to help prevent gastrointestinal issues while on antibiotics.

Prosthetics

Avoid dentures, night guards, and CPAP machines for 7–14 days after surgery.

Sleep Position

Sleep slightly elevated, at roughly a 30-degree angle, for 7–14 days, and avoid sleeping on the surgical side.
