Implant Pre/Post Operative Care of the Mouth

No Smoking

There is a high risk of implant failure when smoking takes place after implant placement. Please avoid smoking entirely during your recovery.

Swelling Management

Hold an ice pack on the cheek where the implant was placed for 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off for the next 24 hours to reduce swelling.

Pain Relief

Take ibuprofen as directed in the pharmacological protocol below.

Dietary Guidelines

  • Eat soft foods during the initial week.
  • Avoid chewing near the surgical site for at least two weeks.
  • Avoid foods high in salt, spice, and citrus (including tomatoes and citrus juices).
  • Skip popcorn, chips, nuts, and other hard foods for two weeks to prevent irritation at the implant site.

Oral Hygiene

Avoid brushing the surgical area for the first week. Beginning the day after surgery, start using a Chlorhexidine rinse as instructed below. Also avoid strenuous activities like heavy lifting during the first week.

Pharmacological Protocol for Implant Placement

  • Ibuprofen 800mg: One tablet one hour before your appointment, then twice daily for three days.
  • Chlorhexidine: Three times daily starting two days before surgery; discontinue after surgery as instructed.
  • Amoxicillin 500mg: Four tablets one hour prior to surgery, then one tablet three times daily for seven days (an alternative Cleocin 300mg dosing is available for patients with a penicillin allergy).

Please follow your prescribed protocol exactly, and call our Henderson office at (702) 212-6641 with any questions or concerns.
