Post-Operative Care Instructions for Tooth Extractions and Immediate Denture Placement

Smoking Cessation

It is absolutely vital that you avoid smoking, as it can hinder the healing process and create complications.

Swelling Reduction

Apply ice packs to the cheek in 20-minute intervals, alternating with 20-minute rest periods, throughout the first day.

Pain Control

Take 800mg of ibuprofen one hour before the procedure, then continue twice daily for three days afterward, following your provider’s medication instructions.

Dietary Guidelines

  • Eat only soft foods for the first week.
  • Avoid chewing near the extraction site for two weeks.
  • Eliminate spicy, high-salt, citrus, and crunchy foods for two weeks.

Oral Hygiene

  • Skip brushing the surgical area for seven days.
  • Begin Chlorhexidine rinses three times daily for one week, starting the day after treatment.
  • Avoid strenuous activity and heavy lifting during the first week.

Denture Management

  • Wear your dentures continuously for the first 24 hours to protect the surgical area.
  • After the first day, clean dentures nightly with a denture brush.
  • Store dentures in water or a cleaning solution overnight.
