Root Planing
Root planing removes bacteria, toxins, tartar, and diseased material from the tooth root surface — extending the full length of the root, down to where it meets the gum and bone. It’s typically the first step in treating periodontal disease, which often has no obvious symptoms early on beyond gums that bleed easily, persistent bad taste, or gum redness and swelling. Left untreated, periodontal disease progressively damages the structures that support your teeth and can eventually lead to tooth loss. It’s also linked to broader health risks, including heart disease and diabetes.
Periodontal Maintenance
For patients who’ve already been treated for periodontal disease — whether through root planing or surgery — a regular cleaning is no longer sufficient. Periodontal maintenance clears plaque and tartar from above and below the gumline along the full length of each tooth, smooths rough root surfaces as needed, and monitors pocket depth over time. It’s usually performed three to four times a year, depending on how quickly plaque accumulates, how much inflammation is present, and how consistent your home care has been.
